New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) In a major crackdown on the illegal trade of narcotic substances and illicit liquor, the police team of Delhi’s Karawal Nagar police station has arrested three accused and recovered a substantial quantity of ganja, illicit liquor, and cash believed to be the proceeds of the illegal trade, officials said on Saturday.
An official statement said that on the intervening night of June 18 and 19, Head Constable Tarun of Karawal Nagar Police Station noticed two suspicious looking persons, a man and a woman, standing outside a house in Delhi’s Shiv Vihar area with cardboard boxes containing illicit liquor and a bag containing a green leafy substance.
Upon detailed verification, the recovered items were found to comprise 122 quarter bottles of Night Blue Whisky, 278 quarter bottles of ‘Santra Desi Sharab’, 22 quarter bottles of White and Blue Whisky, 24 quarter bottles of Officers Choice Whisky, 18 beer cans, all marked ‘For Sale in Haryana and Delhi Only’, along with 320 gm of ‘ganja’.
The accused man has been identified as 24-year-old Ajay, while the woman is in her thirties. Both of them are residents of Delhi’s Karawal Nagar.
During police questioning, the accused duo disclosed that they had procured the liquor for illegal sale and further revealed that a large quantity of ganja was concealed at the residence of a third accused, identified as Om, in Prem Vihar.
Acting promptly on the information, a dedicated team led by Inspector Sanjay Singh, Station House Officer of Karawal Nagar Police Station, along with other police staff under the supervision of Yatin Sharma, Khajuri Khas assistant Commissioner of Police, reached the location.
Police said the accused persons were informed of their legal rights, and notices under Section 50 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were served to them.
According to police officials, during the subsequent search, 21.720 kg of ganja was recovered from the premises of the third accused.
Further investigation led to the recovery of Rs 2,51,000 in cash from the residence of Ajay and the female accused, which is suspected to be proceeds from the sale of contraband substances.
Subsequently, an FIR under Section 33 of the Delhi Excise Act and Sections 20/29 of the NDPS Act was registered at the Karawal Nagar Police Station.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and distribution network involved in the supply of the contraband.
The total seized items include Rs 2,51,000 in cash, 22.040 kg of ganja, 450 quarter bottles of illicit liquor and 18 beer cans.
