Denied MLC ticket, RJD leader Shivchandra Ram resigns from all party posts

Patna, June 8 (IANS) Senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Bihar minister Shivchandra Ram resigned from all his party positions on Monday, expressing disappointment over not being nominated for the upcoming Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) elections.

Shivchandra Ram, who was serving as the National President of the RJD’s SC/ST Cell, announced his resignation during a hastily convened press conference in Patna.

Visibly emotional, he broke down while addressing the media and accused the party of failing to honour its commitment to him.

According to Ram, he had been assured an MLC ticket and had worked tirelessly for the party over the years, following every direction issued by the leadership.

However, when the candidate list was finalised, the nomination was given to another leader.

Without naming any individual, he remarked that the truth about who really holds influence within the party and who does not will eventually come to light.

He said that his name had been under serious consideration for the Legislative Council seat, but it was unexpectedly dropped at the last moment.

The development came shortly after the RJD officially announced Sunil Kumar Singh as its candidate for the Bihar Legislative Council elections.

Considered a close confidant of former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, Sunil Singh filed his nomination papers on the final day of the nomination process and is expected to return to the Legislative Council for a second term.

Ram’s resignation has added to the signs of internal discontent within the RJD over the selection of candidates.

Earlier, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya had also publicly questioned the decision to renominate Sunil Singh, highlighting growing differences within sections of the party.

While announcing his resignation, Shivchandra Ram said that despite his long-standing dedication and loyalty to the RJD, he felt he had not received fair treatment.

His emotional appeal and departure from all organisational responsibilities have triggered fresh political discussion ahead of the Legislative Council elections.

With the nomination process now complete, political observers will be closely watching whether the latest episode of internal dissent has any impact on the RJD’s organisational unity in the run-up to the MLC elections.
