Denied renomination, Trinamool MLA from Bengal’s Murshidabad quits party

Kolkata, April 16 (IANS) Veteran and three-time Trinamool Congress legislator from Jalangi Assembly constituency in minority-dominated Murshidabad district in West Bengal, Abdur Razzak, on Thursday announced the decision to quit the party out of grievance of not being renominated this time.

While announcing the decision to quit Trinamool Congress at a press conference, he also launched a scathing attack against the party leadership and forecasted that the party candidates this time will be defeated not only in Jalangi, but also in adjacent Domkal and Raninagar Assembly constituencies, where the party candidates got elected in the 2021 Assembly polls.

Claiming that he was denied renomination because he was unable to pay a hefty amount to the party, Razzak said that currently, there was no room for honesty within the party.

“Those are experts in extortion and hence can pay hefty amounts to the party to get nominations. It can be said beyond doubt that Trinamool Congress candidates will be defeated in the Jalangi, Domkal, and Raninagar Assembly constituencies. Let the results be out, and you will see that my predictions are correct. My hunch is that elsewhere in the district, the party’s performance will not be satisfactory,” said Razzak.

Trinamool Congress’ district president in Murshidabad, Apurba Sarkar a.k.a. David, said that the party leadership had the information that Razzak was maintaining a clandestine understanding with the opposition parties and hence he was denied renomination this time.

“Before every election, some people suffer from frustration. This also happened before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls. However, after the result, the reverse-frustration starts for them,” said Sarkar.

According to him, another reason for denying renomination to Razzak was his proven involvement in corruption.

Although Razzak had announced his decision to quit Trinamool Congress, he did not say anything about his future political move. This time, the Trinamool Congress candidate from Jalangi is Babar Ali. Since his name was announced as the candidate, infighting in the Murshidabad unit of the ruling party erupted, with many within the party claiming that the candidate was an outsider.
