‘Directionless after electoral defeats’: Gujarat BJP leaders attack Rahul Gandhi over ‘traitor’ remarks

Gandhinagar, May 21 (IANS) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Gujarat, including Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and State Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia, have criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following his recent remarks in which he referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah as “traitors”.

The controversy emerged after Gandhi, during a public address in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli on Wednesday, allegedly described the Prime Minister and Home Minister as “traitors” in the context of criticism directed at the ruling BJP and RSS.

Gandhi said, “When you go back home, when these RSS workers come to you, they will talk about Narendra Modi, they will talk about Amit Shah. You look them in the face and say, ‘Your Prime Minister is a traitor, your home minister is a traitor, your organisation is a traitor. You have worked to sell out India. You have attacked our organisation, our Constitution, BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi’. Tell them this.”

In a post responding to the remarks, Sanghavi said the Congress leadership had become “completely directionless” after being rejected in elections.

He stated that the party had shifted away from constructive politics. “Instead of doing positive politics on issues like national interest, their politics has now been reduced only to confusion, opposition and irresponsible statements,” he said.

Sanghavi further added that questioning national achievements had become a defining feature of Congress politics, including issues related to defence, governance, and India’s international standing.

State Minister Arjun Modhwadia said Rahul Gandhi’s comments reflected “frustration, political disappointment and mental bankruptcy”.

“Repeated electoral defeats had affected the Congress leadership’s judgement and the language against the Prime Minister and Home Minister was indecent,” he said in a post.

The BJP has consistently argued that Rahul Gandhi’s political rhetoric becomes sharper after electoral setbacks.

Party leaders claim that repeated defeats in national and state elections have influenced the tone of opposition criticism, while the Congress maintains that its statements are directed at government policies and accountability rather than individuals.
