New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) In a major crackdown under its zero-tolerance policy against drugs, the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of East District, Delhi Police, has arrested a drug peddler and recovered 1.957 kg of cannabis (ganja) from his possession. The action was carried out on the basis of specific secret information and sustained field Intelligence, officials said on Saturday.

Police stated that the operation highlights their continued efforts to curb the spread of narcotics at the local level. Following the arrest, a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and the accused has been taken on police custody remand. Further investigation is underway to identify his associates and trace the supply chain.

According to officials, in view of rising concerns over drug trafficking, a dedicated team of AATS/East District had been deployed under the supervision of ACP/Operations and the leadership of Inspector Pawan Yadav, Incharge AATS. The team, comprising SI Vikram Singh, SI Sandeep Singh, ASI Rajeev Kumar, and Head Constables Ashwani, Krishan, and Vikrant, was engaged in active surveillance and area domination duties.

On April 27, the team received specific information regarding a person allegedly involved in selling ganja near Goshala Road, Subzi Mandi, Gazipur. Acting promptly, the police team reached the spot and laid surveillance. During the operation, a suspicious individual was identified. On noticing the presence of police, he attempted to flee but was chased and apprehended by the alert team.

During a search conducted in accordance with legal procedures, 1.957 kg of ganja was recovered from his possession. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he was involved in local-level drug supply. He revealed that he procured ganja for further distribution among users to earn easy money and to sustain his addiction.

The accused has been identified as Neeraj Kumar (24), a resident of Village Ram Nagar, Busra, under PS Gai Ghat, PO Hasna, District Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He is illiterate and works as a sweeper. Police said his criminal antecedents are being verified.

An FIR (No. 135/2026) has been registered at PS PIA under Sections 20/61/85 of the NDPS Act. The accused has been taken into custody, and further investigation is in progress to establish backward and forward linkages in the drug network.
