Eight Trinamool members in Shiuli Gram Panchayat resign, citing Bengal Assembly election verdict

Kolkata, June 21 (IANS) Trinamool Congress leader and Pradhan of Shiuli Gram Panchayat, Arun Kumar Ghosh and seven other members have resigned from their posts, reducing the strength of the party in this gram panchayat in the Barrackpore area of North 24 Parganas district.

They went to the BDO office of Barrackpore Block II and submitted their resignations. The outgoing Pradhan claimed that this decision was taken out of respect for the people’s verdict in the recently concluded state Assembly elections where Trinamool Congress was ousted from power.

Meanwhile, Naihati Municipality Chairman Ashok Chatterjee also sent his resignation letter via email Saturday night. The municipality also falls under North 24 Parganas district.

It is worth noting that out of the total 30 seats in Shiuli Gram Panchayat, there are currently 29 members. Of these, Trinamool has 24 members, BJP has three members, and Left Front has two members.

On Sunday, eight Trinamool members, including the pradhan, resigned, resulting in a major change in the panchayat’s numbers.

Speaking to media persons, Arun Kumar Ghosh said, “The people in this area voted against us in the Assembly elections. Therefore, the decision to resign voluntarily has been taken to respect that popular mandate.” He also indicated that a few more members of the Trinamool Congress may resign in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Naihati Municipality Chairman Ashok Chatterjee also followed the same path. Earlier, two councillors of that municipality had also resigned. As a result, the list of resignations by Trinamool public representatives in North 24 Parganas district is getting longer.

It is worth mentioning that after the change of government in the state, Trinamool is losing civic bodies one after another.

A few days ago, the boards of Mohanpur Panchayat and Barakpur Municipality, adjacent to Shiuli Gram Panchayat, were dissolved. In addition, Trinamool public representatives are resigning from various posts in Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and gram panchayats across the state. As a result, civic services have practically come to a standstill during the monsoon season.
