Ex-Trinamool MLA Atin Ghosh moves HC seeking anticipatory bail in land-grabbing case

Kolkata, June 30 (IANS) Former Trinamool Congress MLA Atin Ghosh on Tuesday approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking anticipatory bail in a land corruption case.

The Bidhannagar North police have already summoned the former Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh in that case. However, instead of responding to the summons, Atin Ghosh moved the High Court and appealed against the police’s action

On Tuesday, Atin’s lawyer Ayan Bhattacharya argued in the court that Atin and his family have been implicated in the land corruption case. He even claimed that a member of his client’s family suffering from cancer was also harassed. Therefore, Atin requested an urgent hearing of the case.

Justice Suvra Ghosh allowed the petition to be filed, which is likely to be heard later this week.

Last week, a case of land grabbing was filed against Atin and his daughter. There is an allegation of fraud of Rs 50 lakh against them. A hotel owner alleged that his property was forcibly taken away for a small amount of money.

Although the incident took place in the Pragati Maidan police station area, the complaint was later filed with the Bidhannagar North police station in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata. Officers of that police station are investigating the incident.

However, Atin Ghosh dismissed the allegations against him. He said, “I do not know the person who made the complaint. My daughter bought a property from them. In my 50 years of political life, no one can make any corruption allegations against me. Still, if the police call me for the sake of investigation, I am ready to cooperate in every way.”

Echoing similar words, Priyadarshini said, “It is a completely false allegation. The person who made this complaint cheated us. We have all the documents.” Atin and his daughter warned that they would file a defamation case against the complainant for making such false allegations.

Trinamool leader Atin Ghosh had won from Kashipur-Belgacchia Assembly constituency in north Kolkata in the 2021 Assembly elections. This time too, he contested from that constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket. However, he lost the election to BJP candidate Ritesh Tiwari.
