The Hindu Council of Australia hosted its annual Deepawali celebration at the Federal Parliament, attended by the High Commissioner of India and several dignitaries. Among the distinguished guests were Speaker the Hon Milton Dick, the Hon Michelle Rowland representing the Prime Minister, and the Hon Susan Ley, Leader of the Opposition, who together led the participation of parliamentarians from all major parties.
Speakers praised the vibrant Indian Hindu diaspora for enriching Australia’s multicultural society. Dr Andrew Charlton MP, Cabinet Secretary and Chair of the Parliamentary Groups for Friendship with India, drew attention to the recognition of October as Hindu Heritage Month in Australia.
The event featured a delightful cultural program of Indian classical dance, instrumental music, and an exhibition of South Indian dolls, vividly portraying the diverse ways Deepawali is celebrated across India. The celebration symbolised light, unity, and friendship between Australia and India.
