BREAKING: A bushfire is sending plumes of smoke across Maroochydore, with firefighters unable to access the blaze.
Firefighters rushed to Duporth Ave after the bushfire was reported on Goat Island in the Maroochy river mouth, but were unable to do anything to fight the fire.
The fire broke out about 11.15am, clearly visible from apartments at Maroochydore across the water, and a north-easterly wind is blowing the smoke across homes along the Maroochy River.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said with the fire inaccessible, officers would monitor the scene and wait for the fire to burn itself out.
He advised nearby residents to close windows and doors against the smoke, and anyone suffering respiratory problems to keep medication at hand and call 000 if necessary.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife officers are also at the scene.
