Jaipur, April 22 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the unveiling ceremony of a statue honouring the invincible warrior, the late Lieutenant General Sagat Singh Rathore, in Churu on Wednesday, where he paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary military leader.

The event witnessed the presence of several prominent dignitaries, including Om Prakash Mathur, Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Agriculture Minister Bhagirath Choudhary, and senior leader Rajendra Rathore.

Addressing the gathering, Birla highlighted that the life of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh stands as a powerful symbol of courage, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to national service.

He recalled the officer’s remarkable contributions, beginning with his role in the Indian Army’s display of valour during the Second World War and extending to his leadership during the Goa Liberation Movement, where the Tricolour was proudly hoisted.

Birla further noted that Sagat Singh’s bold and strategic decisions at the Nathu La border significantly strengthened India’s defences.

His decisive leadership during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, particularly in securing the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka, played a crucial role in the creation of Bangladesh.

These achievements, Birla said, firmly establish Sagat Singh as one of the nation’s most distinguished military figures.

Emphasising Rajasthan’s enduring legacy, Birla remarked that the state has always been known for its spirit of valour, patriotism, and sacrifice.

He observed that a deep sense of national duty is ingrained in the people of the region, with countless families contributing to the service of the nation.

He described the statue not merely as a memorial, but as a lasting source of inspiration for future generations.

According to him, it will motivate young people to dedicate themselves to the service of the country and uphold the values exemplified by great heroes.

Concluding his address, Birla stated that the legacy of Sagat Singh is a matter of national pride.

His life, he said, demonstrates that courage, determination, and dedication can overcome any challenge.

He urged the youth to draw inspiration from such icons and actively contribute to nation-building.
