Powerful surf has closed a number of beaches across the Gold Coast today — and possibly caused some boardriders to chuck a sickie.
Lifeguards have closed beaches at Staghorn Ave at Surfers Paradise, Miami, North Burleigh, Tallebudgera, Pacific and all locations south of Currumbin except Greenmount this morning.
Chief lifeguard Warren Young said pulsing surf up to two metres and the powerful currents caused by them had seen lifeguards lower the red and yellow flags at some locations.
He said lifeguards would monitor conditions throughout the day.
“There is a strong current inshore,” Mr Young said.
Mr Young said inexperienced surfers should not paddle out.
“It is a pulsing swell at the moment, some inexperienced surfers could get out (behind the breakers) and find themselves well out of their depth, if you excuse the pun,” he said.
But he said there were plenty of waves around for experienced boardriders.
The surf has broken a month-long “swell drought” for the Gold Coast.
“There are some really nice waves coming through,” Mr Young said.
