The Consulate General of India in Brisbane celebrated the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on the Gold Coast in partnership with GOPIO Gold Coast, bringing together yoga practitioners, community leaders and members of the Indian diaspora under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, according to the Consulate General of India in Brisbane.
The event featured yoga sessions along with meditation and sound healing activities, highlighting yoga’s role in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being. According to the organisers, the programme encouraged participants to adopt holistic wellness practices and underscored the growing popularity of yoga across multicultural communities in Australia.
Federal Member of Parliament Angie Bell and Queensland Minister Hermann Vorster attended the celebration as chief guests, joining participants in recognising the health and wellness benefits of yoga. According to the Consulate General, the event reflected the broad community support for International Day of Yoga and the strengthening cultural ties between India and Australia.
The Consul General of India in Brisbane, Neetu Bhagotia, thanked participants for their enthusiastic involvement and encouraged them to make yoga a part of their daily lives. According to the Consulate General, she described yoga as one of India’s enduring gifts to the world, promoting healthier lifestyles and greater personal well-being.
Observed annually on June 21 following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2014, the International Day of Yoga is celebrated worldwide to promote the benefits of yoga for health, harmony and sustainable living. According to the United Nations and India’s Ministry of Ayush, this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlights the role of yoga in supporting healthy and active lives across all age groups.
The Consulate General of India in Brisbane said the Gold Coast celebration formed part of a wider programme of International Day of Yoga events across Queensland, reinforcing the enduring cultural connection between India and Australia through health, wellness and community engagement.
