Porbandar, July 8 (IANS) The Gujarat government has begun the second phase of redevelopment of the Shri Krishna-Rukmini Yatradham at Madhavpur in Porbandar district, with works worth Rs 43.72 crore aimed at restoring the historic Madhavrayaji Temple, improving pilgrim facilities and upgrading tourism infrastructure at the coastal religious site.

The project forms part of a broader master plan being implemented by the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board to develop the pilgrimage destination associated with the marriage of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini.

According to the state government, the master plan seeks to integrate all ancient and religious sites located within a one-kilometre radius of Madhavpur village into a single heritage circuit.

The second phase follows the completion of the first phase, which was carried out at a cost of Rs 47.99 crore.

During the initial phase, the Shri Rukmini Mataji Temple, Chori Myra (the sacred wedding altar), the sacred Brahmakund and the site’s main entrance gate were developed and inaugurated.

The government has set a target of completing the second phase within two years. A major component of the new phase is the restoration of the historic Madhavraiji Temple at an estimated cost of Rs 20.25 crore.

The project is intended to preserve the temple while enhancing facilities for devotees and visitors.

The redevelopment also includes a 200-metre beachfront near the temple, where a tourism zone will be created with food kiosks, a food court seating area, public toilets and other visitor amenities.

To improve crowd management during the annual Madhavpur Fair and other religious events, the government will develop an outer plaza and parking facilities for Rs 5.31 crore.

Road connectivity to the temple is also set to improve. The Roads and Buildings Department will widen the road connecting the local turtle breeding centre to the Madhavrayaji Temple to nine metres, providing easier access for pilgrims and tourists.

The project further includes landscaping, fountains, sculptures depicting Sanatan culture, signboards and designated selfie points, with these works estimated to cost Rs 3.45 crore.

Underground electrical and plumbing networks will be installed across the complex, while a smart irrigation system will be laid to maintain landscaped areas and greenery.

“The redevelopment is being undertaken in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi’ (Development as well as Heritage) vision. The upgraded pilgrimage destination is expected to improve facilities for devotees while supporting tourism and generating local employment and economic activity,” officials said.
