Junagadh, July 11 (IANS) Four members of a family from Banaskantha district were killed and four others injured after an Ertiga car they were travelling in crashed into a stationary truck on the four-lane road near Majevadi village in Gujarat’s Junagadh district on Saturday.

Two of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition, while a child travelling in the vehicle survived the accident.

According to preliminary information, the family, residents of Tharad taluka in Banaskantha district, was travelling to Somnath for the immersion of ashes when the accident occurred on the new bypass highway near Majevadi village.

The Ertiga reportedly rammed into the rear of a truck that had been standing stationary on the road.

The impact of the collision was severe, completely crushing the front portion of the car. Four occupants died at the scene, while four others sustained injuries.

After receiving information about the crash, local police personnel and a team from the 108 Emergency Service reached the spot and launched rescue operations.

The injured were given initial treatment before being shifted to Junagadh Civil Hospital for further medical care. “Two of the injured remain in a critical condition,” an official said.

Police also recovered the bodies of the deceased from the mangled vehicle and sent them to Junagadh Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

“We have registered the incident and begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, including the circumstances under which the truck had been left stationary on the road,” the official added.

The accident has left the victims’ families in mourning. Following the incident, relatives of the deceased were informed, while authorities continued their investigation and medical treatment of those injured.

Road accidents continue to be a major public safety concern in Gujarat. As per reports, the state recorded 79,054 road accidents between 2021 and 2025, resulting in 38,530 deaths.

The highest number of fatalities was reported in 2022, while the highest number of accidents was recorded in 2025, with 56,100 crashes.
