Gandhinagar, April 14 (IANS) A State Reserve Police (SRP) jawan died by suicide while on duty at the New Secretariat complex in Gandhinagar, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Rajendrasinh Gohil (49), a personnel of SRP Group-9 based in Vadodara and a native of Bhavnagar district.

He was deployed at Gate No. 3 of the high-security Secretariat premises at the time of the incident.

According to police, Gohil had taken charge of his shift around midnight from a reliever. The incident is believed to have taken place late on Monday night.

His body was discovered at around 5 A.M. on Tuesday after a fellow jawan, unable to find him at his assigned post, went in search and found him hanging from a tree near the gate with a plastic rope.

A team from Sector-7 Police Station reached the spot shortly after being alerted. The body was brought down and sent to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for the post-mortem examination.

Inspector A.G. Solanki told IANS, “The body was discovered at around 5 A.M. this morning, while the incident occurred late last night. The body was found when a fellow jawan could not locate him at his post and went out to search for him.”

He added, “The body has been sent for post-mortem and medical examination is underway. He was originally from Bhavnagar district.”

Solanki further said that statements are being recorded as part of the enquiry. “The process of recording statements is underway, including those of family members. The cause of suicide is being ascertained as of now,” he said.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation. No suicide note has been recovered so far.

Officials said all possible angles, including personal and work-related factors, are being examined.

The incident, which occurred within a heavily secured government premises, is under forensic examination, with further details expected after the post-mortem and completion of the enquiry.
