Guwahati emerging as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, says CM Himanta Sarma

Guwahati, June 15 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that Guwahati, long known as the gateway to the Northeast, is now steadily emerging as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, reflecting the city’s growing strategic importance in connectivity, trade and regional development.

In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said he had reviewed a series of ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects in and around Guwahati as the city prepares to witness several landmark developments in the coming days.

“The Gateway to the North East is now emerging as India’s Gateway to South East Asia. As Guwahati prepares to witness many historic moments in the coming days, I reviewed various projects in and around our beautiful capital city,” CM Sarma said.

Though the Chief Minister did not elaborate on specific projects in the post, the remarks come amid a major infrastructure push in Assam, particularly in Guwahati, which has been positioned as a key economic and logistics hub under the Centre’s Act East Policy.

Over the past few years, the state government has undertaken several initiatives aimed at transforming Guwahati’s urban landscape and improving connectivity. These include the expansion of road networks, construction of new flyovers, development of riverfront infrastructure, enhancement of public transport facilities and strengthening of links with neighbouring states and international markets.

The city has also witnessed significant investments in aviation, rail and inland water transport infrastructure, reinforcing its role as the principal gateway to the northeastern region.

Authorities believe improved connectivity will boost trade, tourism and investment while facilitating greater integration with countries in Southeast Asia.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly emphasised Assam’s strategic location as a bridge between mainland India and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The state government has projected Guwahati as a major centre for commerce, logistics, education and healthcare in the region.

Officials said several high-profile projects are expected to be unveiled or reach important milestones in the coming weeks, further strengthening Guwahati’s position as a key growth engine for the Northeast and India’s engagement with Southeast Asia.
