New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the fire incident in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area, describing the tragedy as “extremely distressing” and extending his condolences to families who lost their loved ones.

In a post on social media platform X, Home Minister Shah said his thoughts are with those affected by the devastating incident.

“The fire incident in Vivek Vihar, Delhi, is extremely distressing. My condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. May God grant strength to the bereaved families to endure this sorrow,” he wrote.

The Home Minister also assured that authorities are making every possible effort to assist the injured and provide necessary medical care.

“The local administration is providing the best possible medical care to the injured. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he added.

The incident took place at around 4 a.m. on Sunday, reportedly due to an explosion in an AC unit of a building in B-Block of the upscale colony, leaving nine people dead, including a toddler, while several others were injured.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the building, following which 14 fire engines were dispatched to the scene. During the rescue and relief operations, 15 people were rescued, officials said.

Upon receiving information about the fire at around 4 a.m., police staff, along with the Vivek Vihar SHO and ACP, immediately proceeded to the spot. The fire brigade and crime team also reached the premises at B-13, Vivek Vihar Phase I.

Officials said that the fire was brought under control by around 6 a.m., and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

During the rescue and fire-fighting operations, 15 persons were rescued from the building, of whom two sustained minor injuries and were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.

During the preliminary enquiry, it was found that nine persons had lost their lives. Further enquiry and proceedings at the spot are in progress.
