Kolkata, July 6 (IANS) Police have recovered illegal firearms and cartridges from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas once again and arrested one person in connection with it.

Based on a tip-off received from a confidential source, the police of Nazat police station in Basirhat police district arrested the person with weapons on Sunday night.

The name of the arrested person is Salauddin Molla. A one-shot pipe gun and seven rounds of fresh cartridges were recovered from the arrested person.

According to the police, a tip-off was received from a confidential source by the police officers of Rajbari Outpost (OP) under Nazat police station in Sandeshkhali.

It is learnt that Salauddin, a resident of Shankardah village of Nazat police station, has hidden illegal firearms and cartridges in his house. The initial assumption of the investigating police officers is that these weapons were stored with the intention of committing some major criminal act.

As soon as the news was received, a special police team from Rajbari Outpost launched a surprise search operation last night.

A search was conducted at the house of Salauddin, a resident of Shankardah village, and the search was successful.

A country-made pipe gun and seven rounds of live cartridges were recovered from the house.

Basirhat Police District Superintendent, Alaknanda Bhowal said, “The police have arrested the accused and action is being taken as per the law. We will also investigate who else is involved in this. The police have registered a case against the accused under specific sections of the Arms Act, 1959.”

A vigorous investigation has been started to find out where exactly these weapons were brought from and where they were planned to be smuggled.

It is to be noted that a large quantity of firearms were recovered from Sandeshkhali area earlier as well.

In June, the Special Task Force of West Bengal Police conducted a search operation in the Manipur area of Sandeshkhali Block No. II. It was then that the firearms were recovered from a Trinamool Congress leader’s pond. Shortly after that incident, firearms and cartridges were again recovered in Sandeshkhali.
