New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) India is not just catching up with the world’s leading digital economies but has the potential to emerge as a global leader in advanced 5G capabilities, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said on Tuesday after Bharti Airtel launched 5G network slicing technology for its postpaid customers.

Welcoming the rollout of 5G slicing capabilities in India, Lt. Gen. Dr. S.P. Kochhar, Director General of COAI, described the development as an important milestone in the evolution of next-generation digital infrastructure in the country.

“We welcome the introduction of 5G network slicing capabilities in India, marking an important milestone in the evolution of next-generation digital infrastructure,” Kochhar said.

He noted that network slicing is an advanced 5G technology already deployed in countries such as the United States, Singapore, China and several European nations, and said it was encouraging to see India rapidly adopting such transformative technologies.

“It is equally encouraging to see India catching up with the world’s most advanced digital economies in adopting such transformative technologies,” he said.

“With continued innovation and investment, we look forward to India not just keeping pace, but emerging as a global leader in advanced 5G capabilities,” Kochhar added.

The remarks came after Airtel announced the launch of ‘Priority Postpaid’, a new service powered by 5G slicing technology that aims to deliver a more stable and consistent network experience for postpaid users.

According to the telecom operator, the technology enables intelligent and dynamic segmentation of network capacity, helping provide superior connectivity even during periods of heavy network traffic.

Airtel said it has upgraded its 5G infrastructure with slicing capabilities to make the network more efficient, increase capacity and allocate resources in a targeted manner for Priority customers.

The company said the service has been designed for users who rely heavily on uninterrupted connectivity for work, online collaboration and entertainment.

Commenting on the launch, Shashwat Sharma said the company remains focused on delivering customer-centric innovation through advanced technologies.

“Priority Postpaid is our latest innovation powered by the 5G slicing technology. It provides a superior, more reliable, and dependable experience to our customers — whether they are attending a client call in traffic, or streaming at a packed concert, or booking a cab in a crowded market,” Sharma said.
