Internet services restored in Jaipur after major anti-encroachment drive; over 100 structures removed

Jaipur, June 8 (IANS) Internet services were restored in Jaipur on Monday evening after remaining suspended for nearly 19 hours as authorities carried out a major anti-encroachment drive in the Jagatpura area.

The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) demolished more than 100 illegal structures, including five religious structures, as part of a road-widening project along the railway line from the Nandpuri Underpass to Jagatpura.

The operation was undertaken to widen the road to its sanctioned width of 80 feet.

To prevent any law-and-order issues, Jaipur Divisional Commissioner V. Saravana Kumar had ordered the suspension of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mobile internet services in several parts of the city from midnight on Sunday until midnight on Monday.

However, services were restored at around 7 p.m. after the operation concluded peacefully.

The administration deployed around 3,000 police personnel to ensure security during the demolition drive.

Power supply to the entire Nandpuri area was temporarily disconnected, roads were barricaded and public movement was restricted.

Drone cameras were used for aerial surveillance, while police personnel made announcements through loudspeakers asking residents not to gather on rooftops or record videos of the operation.

Bulldozers and JCB machines were deployed from early morning to clear encroachments along the route.

Among the structures removed were five religious structures that fell within the road’s right of way.

According to officials, several stretches of the road had narrowed to just 25-30 feet because of encroachments, despite revenue records showing an approved width of 80 feet.

The approximately 1.5-km stretch connects the Nandpuri Underpass with Jagatpura and passes through six major residential colonies.

The administration said the project would significantly ease traffic congestion on Hare Krishna Marg and improve connectivity between Nandpuri and Jagatpura.

Residents of more than 50 colonies are expected to benefit through easier access to key areas such as Malviya Nagar, Pradhan Marg and Apex Circle.

The internet suspension covered a large part of Jaipur district.

In Jaipur North, services were suspended in areas falling under the Ramganj, Galta Gate, Manak Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Amer, Brahmpuri, Nahargarh, Kotwali, Jalupura, Sanjay Circle, Shastri Nagar, Bhatta Basti, Vidyadhar Nagar and Jaisinghpura Khor police station limits.

In Jaipur East, the shutdown extended to areas under the Bassi, Kanota, Tunga, Adarsh Nagar, Transport Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Jamdoli, SMS Hospital, Gandhi Nagar, Lalkothi, Moti Doongri, Airport, Malviya Nagar, Jawahar Circle, Bajaj Nagar, Kho-Nagorian, Sanganer, Pratap Nagar, Ramnagaria and Malpura Gate police stations.

One of the key developments during the drive was the removal of a religious structure that had fallen within the designated road boundary.

Officials said the action was part of the broader effort to clear all encroachments obstructing the road-widening project.

The operation concluded without any major untoward incident, with authorities describing it as one of the largest anti-encroachment drives conducted in Jaipur in recent years.
