Srinagar, May 18 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch filed a chargesheet on Monday in the court against a retired senior engineer in a case of forgery and destruction of evidence.

The accused was the Superintendent Engineer of the J&K State Power Development Corporation and has retired now.

A statement by the Crime Branch Kashmir said, “The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch has submitted a chargesheet before the Hon’ble Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar in FIR No. 09/2015 under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 201 RPC against the then in-charge Superintendent Engineer, J&K State Power Development Corporation (now retired).”

The Crime Branch said that upon receipt of a written complaint alleging manipulation of the date of birth in the service records of the then in-charge Superintendent Engineer, J&K State Power Development Corporation, a probe was initiated at the police station Crime Branch Kashmir (now Economic Offences Wing Kashmir).

Investigation revealed that the accused fraudulently manipulated his date of birth in official service records from “28-10-1955 to 28-10-1958 in order to secure undue service benefits”, the press release mentioned.

The manipulation was confirmed through FSL Srinagar and J&K BOSE verification reports. The accused also destroyed his original service book to conceal evidence, leading to the invocation of Section 201 RPC.

The investigation in the instant case was concluded as proved against him, and accordingly, the chargesheet was submitted before the Court of Law for judicial determination.

The statement also had a word of caution, saying the general public is advised to remain vigilant against economic fraudsters and report any such incidents directly to SSP EOW Kashmir, Crime Branch J&K.

Victims of economic fraud may also send their complaints to the official email: sspeow-kmr@jkpolice.gov.in, said the statement.

The Crime Branch wing of J&K Police carries out dedicated investigations in special crimes and in economic offences that require special expertise and dedicated investigation. The executive police engaged with maintenance of law and order cannot devote full time to such investigations, and that is why such crimes are handled by the Crime Branch.

J&K Crime Branch has two wings, one for the Valley and one for the Jammu division. Both these wings have special teams of sleuths deployed to deal with economic offences exclusively.
