J&K: Three mortar shells found and defused near LoC in Rajouri

Jammu, June 8 (IANS) Police in J&K’s Rajouri district said on Monday that three mortar shells were found along the Line of Control (LoC) at two places and were later successfully defused by bomb disposal squads.

Police said two mortar shells were noticed in the Jhanghar forest area, while another was found abandoned at a secluded location in Makri village of Nowshera sector this morning.

“The bomb disposal squad of the army defused all three mortar shells safely,” police said.

In another incident, police recovered an aeroplane-shaped balloon with PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) marking at Dhaki Nala near the International Border in Samba district today.

The white and green-coloured balloon was noticed by villagers and later seized by a team from the local police station. Such balloons frequently drift into Indian territory from across the border and are regularly recovered from villages located along the border belt in J&K.

Mortar shells fired from across the LoC in J&K have often been found unexploded, posing a serious threat to the safety of civilians living along the border.

After the Indian armed forces carried out ‘Operation Sindoor’ to avenge civilian killings by Pakistan-backed terrorists in Pahalgam, Pakistani troops resorted to indiscriminate targeting of civilian facilities along the LoC with heavy mortar shelling.

In Poonch district alone, 14 civilians were killed in Pakistan’s shelling of civilian facilities. In addition to the loss of lives, many residential houses and commercial structures were destroyed.

After Pakistan escalated tensions in 2025, India destroyed many defence facilities of Pakistan by carrying out precision strikes at those locations.
