Kolkata Police arrest two for egg attack on TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh

Kolkata, June 16 (IANS) Kolkata Police on Tuesday arrested two persons for allegedly throwing eggs at Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh outside former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, south Kolkata, officials said.

The arrested persons have been identified as Chandan Kayal and Ravi Kayal. The arrests were made based on the complaint lodged by Kunal Ghosh at Kalighat Police Station late Monday night, hours after the incident.

On Monday evening, Kunal Ghosh and several senior leaders of Trinamool Congress had attended a meeting at Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee’s house in Kalighat. After the meeting, Trinamool spokesperson and Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh stepped out and spoke to the media persons. Just then, eggs were thrown at him, hitting him on the neck and back.

Ghosh described the entire incident as an attempt to harass him. He also questioned the role of the police despite the presence of security in front of the former Chief Minister’s residence. He had filed a complaint with the Kalighat police station on Monday night. He demanded that the accused be arrested immediately. On Tuesday afternoon, the police finally made the arrests.

In a long Facebook post on Tuesday morning, Kunal Ghish wrote, “I don’t need any help or support from anyone except my well-wishers and supporters. I was standing alone, unarmed, and insecure at the request of the media. My eyes were on the camera. Eggs were thrown at that time. The police were just onlookers. After that, I walked out of there and went to the police station alone at night.”

Kunal Ghosh further wrote that he never supported this kind of politics. After the 2021 state Assembly elections, he stood by the BJP workers who were at the receiving end of atrocities. At that time, he publicly protested against the police breaking into BJP leader Sajal Ghosh’s house and harassing advocate Kaustuv Bagchi.

Even as a Trinamool spokesperson, he felt that these were not the right things to do. Kunal wrote, “I follow my own path. I still say that there were attempts to attack me. There will be more. I am not afraid. One, I will fight against the BJP politically. However, there will be cooperation with the government for the people of Beleghata. Two, I will try to turn around by correcting the mistakes within my party. My body will be lying there at most. But I will not change.”
