Kolkata, July 12 (IANS) Police have rescued a local businessman who was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted in Kolkata’s Posta area, police said on Sunday. It was learnt that the abductors had demanded a ransom of Rs 20 lakh.

Acting on the information, personnel from Posta Police Station rescued the businessman late on Saturday night. Two people have been arrested in connection with the alleged abduction.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

According to the police, the kidnapped businessman has been identified as Dilip Jain, a resident of the Posta Police Station area in north Kolkata.

Originally from Rajasthan, Dilip now lives in Kolkata with his family. On Friday, his family lodged a complaint with Posta Police Station alleging that he had been kidnapped.

The family also informed the police that they had been receiving ransom calls. Based on the complaint, police launched an investigation.

After analysing mobile tower location data and other technical inputs, investigators traced Dilip to a premises on Hariram Goenka Street in the Posta area.

Acting on another tip-off, police raided the premises and rescued the businessman. Simultaneously, two accused, identified as Rohan and Rajesh, were arrested.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the two arrested men had allegedly lent Rs 20 lakh to another person through Dilip Jain, who had received a commission for facilitating the transaction. Later, when the borrower failed to repay the money, Rohan and Rajesh allegedly demanded that Dilip return the amount.

However, police said Dilip allegedly denied responsibility. The accused then allegedly hatched a plan to kidnap him and recover the money by demanding ransom. Police have taken the accused into custody and are continuing their investigation. Investigators are trying to ascertain whether anyone else was involved in the kidnapping. Family members of the businessman are also being questioned to determine whether anyone other than the two arrested accused had made ransom calls.
