Kolkata, Sep 15 (IANS) Kolkata Police volunteers will wear saffron clothes during upcoming Durga puja, a Kolkata Police source said on Tuesday.

Accordingly, Lalbazar (Kolkata Police headquarters) has designed clothes for 20,000 volunteers.

According to a Lalbazar official, such measures have been taken so that the volunteers can perform their duty comfortably for a long time while wearing those clothes.

According to the official, 89 lakh rupees will be spent to make these 20,000 clothes and caps for the upcoming Durga puja.

Before Durga puja, volunteers are recruited by the Kolkata Police to maintain law and order and manage the crowd in puja mandaps.

Usually, the volunteers had to wear half-sleeved T-shirts on duty.

This year, the Durga Puja will be celebrated in the third week of October.

Apart from the Kolkata Police personnel and officers, the Home Guard and civic volunteers also have to perform puja duty right which will continue till Vijayadashami.

During Durga Puja, the police depends on volunteers to maintain law and order and keep traffic smooth in Kolkata.

Apart from school and college students, the police also recruit National Cadet Corps (NCC) members and club members from different areas as volunteers.

After Mahalaya, the volunteers are also trained in the concerned division.

The clothes or uniforms of the volunteers who work hand in hand with the police are also given importance. Therefore, a month before the Durga Puja, the Kolkata Police have designed the uniform.

The Lalbazar official said that two types of saffron clothes are being made. The colour of the clothes with full-sleeved collars will be of dark saffron and light saffron.

The police have designed 12,000 dark saffron and 8,000 light saffron clothes.

The front of the clothes will have the Kolkata Police logo in white. Along with it, ‘Kolkata Police Volunteer’ will be written in small letters on the front and in large letters on the back.

In addition, there will be orange caps for the volunteers.

Lalbazar has allocated 73 lakh rupees for 20,000 clothes and 16 lakh rupees for the caps.

Police sources said that a section of the volunteers will be on the roads wearing these clothes to manage traffic.

In addition, volunteers will be deployed at every big pavilion in Kolkata, where visitors flock every year. They will mainly monitor the safety and security of visitors.
