Kolkata, June 16 (IANS) Kolkata Police on Tuesday issued a traffic advisory ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the International Yoga Day programme in the city on June 21, announcing that Red Road will remain closed for a week.

In a social media post, Kolkata Police said, “In connection with the observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga at Red Road on 21.06.2026, special traffic regulations will be in force in the surrounding areas. Commuters are requested to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the directions of traffic personnel.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to Kolkata on June 21 to attend the World Yoga Day programme. The Prime Minister will participate in the main programme on Red Road. Along with this, the entire city will practically get involved in this programme that day.

According to the advisory, one of Kolkata’s busiest arterial roads, Red Road, will be closed to traffic for a week for preparatory work for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event. Work to erect a makeshift stage has already started in view of the mega event.

Movement of all types of Goods Vehicles shall be restricted along AJC Bose Road towards south from its crossing with Lenin Sarani (Moulali crossing), St. George’s Gate Road, Strand Road up to Raja Woodmunt Street, along C R Avenue from G C Avenue towards south, all along J L Nehru Road (both bound) from 2 a.m. on June 21 till the programme is over, the advisory said.

“Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) will remain closed for all vehicular traffic, except the cars with stickers especially issued for the programme, from 2 a.m. on June 21 till the programme is over,” read the advisory.

The roads which will remain closed for traffic from 2 a.m. on June 21 till the programme is over, include Hospital Road East, West Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, Khidderpore Road from Ghora Pass to J & N Island except Bridge-bound vehicles and AJC Ramp Vehicles, R R Avenue between Y Road Tram Track and Govt. Place West, Gostha Pal Sarani (Kingsway), Queensway, Plassey Gate Road, Dufferin Road, Outram Road, and Esplanade Ramp South-bound of R R Avenue from the crossing of Esplanade Row East.
