‘Made in Assam, enjoyed across world’: Himanta Sarma highlights global reach of state’s products

Guwahati, June 22 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday highlighted the growing international recognition of Assam’s products, stating that the state’s unique goods are steadily finding markets across the globe and carrying Assam’s identity far beyond India’s borders.

In a post on X, Sarma said, “Made in Assam, enjoyed across the world,” while underscoring the increasing global demand for products originating from the northeastern state.

He noted that Assam’s distinctive products are not only reaching international consumers but are also serving as ambassadors of the state’s rich cultural and agricultural heritage. “Assam’s unique products are finding global markets and carrying the State’s identity across continents. We look forward to taking even more of Assam’s finest to the world,” the Chief Minister wrote.

The remarks came amid a series of initiatives by the Assam government aimed at promoting the state’s agricultural, handloom, and traditional products in overseas markets.

In recent weeks, the state has witnessed significant progress in exports, particularly of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged products.

Earlier this month, Sarma flagged off the first international consignment of GI-tagged Tezpur litchis to Singapore from Guwahati, describing it as an important step towards enhancing the global footprint of Assam’s horticultural produce.

The export initiative is expected to provide better market access to local farmers and strengthen the state’s agrarian economy.

The state has also intensified efforts to secure intellectual property protection and branding for its traditional products. Recently, four heritage products from Assam — Bihu Pepa, Karbi Anglong Handloom, Bah Silpa (bamboo craft), and Deori Handloom products — received GI tags, a move expected to boost their market value and ensure authenticity in domestic and international markets.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly stressed that expanding global access for Assam’s indigenous products remains a key component of the government’s strategy to strengthen local livelihoods, preserve traditional crafts, and enhance the state’s economic profile on the international stage.
