Madhya Pradesh: Three labourers crushed to death in sleep

Bhopal/Pithampur, May 5 (IANS) A tragic accident in the industrial city of Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh claimed the lives of three labourers early Tuesday morning, leaving the community in shock.

The incident occurred when a support vehicle accompanying a boring machine ran over the workers as they slept beneath it. Reports indicate that the three men, exhausted after a long night of work, had chosen to rest under the parked vehicle, unaware of the danger that lay ahead. The support vehicle was stationed near the boring machine at a farm owned by Subhash Chauhan and Rudan Singh Solanki in Gavla. Without checking the area beneath, the driver reversed the vehicle, crushing the labourers instantly, police officials said.

The victims, identified as Ramcharan, aged 56, Bhanupratap, aged 19, and Arvind, aged 22, were all residents of different villages in Chhattisgarh. They had come to Pithampur in search of work and were engaged in the ongoing boring operations at the site, said the police officials.

The police rushed to the scene upon receiving information and immediately seized the vehicle involved in the accident. The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination, and their families were informed of the tragedy.

A complaint was lodged by Ramesh Ikka, following which the police registered a case and began an investigation.

Preliminary findings suggest that the accident was the result of the driver’s negligence, as he failed to ensure the safety of the area before moving the heavy vehicle.

The incident has raised serious concerns about worker safety in industrial zones, where labourers often endure gruelling hours and inadequate resting facilities. The fact that the workers chose to sleep beneath a vehicle highlights the harsh conditions they face and the lack of proper arrangements for their welfare.

Authorities are now examining safety protocols and enforcing stricter measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
