AN ELDERLY man is fighting for his life after collapsing at Coolangatta Beach early this morning.
Lifeguards flocked to the 79-year-old and performed CPR on the man until ambulance arrived.
Gold Coast head lifeguard Warren Young said the man was in the knee deep water when the incident occurred.
“He was with his family at the time and his son said he had a pre-existing heart condition,” Mr Young said.
It is understood the man was unconscious but breathing when the ambulance left.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
