Kolkata, June 5 (IANS) A man was arrested with suspected brown sugar near the Indo-Nepal border in Bihar’s Kishanganj district on Friday (June 5) by a joint team of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Bihar Police.

“Around 6.50 a.m., the 41st Bn SSB, Ranidanga, received a specific intelligence input regarding the concealment of suspected narcotics (Brown Sugar) at the residence of an alleged drug dealer in Darbhanga Tola area near Galgalia town,” an SSB official said.

“Acting upon the input, a special joint patrolling party was mobilised comprising the SSB team and personnel of the Bihar Police (Galgalia Police Station),” he added.

The joint team conducted a thorough search of the premises upon reaching the specified location. Around 8.46 a.m., the search operation resulted in the recovery of approximately 404 gm of Brown Sugar, concealed in two separate plastic packets weighing 205 gm and 199 gm respectively.

The narcotic substance was confirmed with the assistance of a drug detection kit, giving a positive indication for narcotics. Each gram of brown sugar can cost between Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000. This means that the seizure was worth more than Rs 20 lakh.

A man named Md Hamid Alam was arrested for possessing narcotics. A mobile phone was also seized.

Authorities are now trying to find out more about his contacts and from where he procured the drugs.

A search is also underway for his associates, if any.

“He has been booked under the NDPS Act at the Galgalia police station. Further investigation is underway. The SSB is ever vigilant against the trafficking of narcotics along the Indo-Nepal border,” the official said.
