Meghalaya CM reviews Rs 1,928 crore redevelopment plan for Tura town

Shillong, May 12 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday chaired a high-level review meeting on the redevelopment of Tura town, with the state government planning projects worth nearly Rs 1,928 crore aimed at transforming the region’s infrastructure, tourism and urban facilities.

The meeting, held in Shillong, was attended by Cabinet Ministers Timothy D. Shira and Sanbor Shullai, along with senior government officials.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of several ongoing infrastructure and development projects in Tura, collectively valued at over Rs 1,331 crore.

Officials also discussed plans for upcoming projects that will be implemented in phases over the next few years. Among the major ongoing projects reviewed were the Tura Integrated Administrative Complex, being developed at a cost of Rs 165 crore and expected to be completed in phases beginning September 2027, the PA Sangma Sports Complex along with its West Stand, the Pa Togan Sangma Track and Field Stadium and the Tura Technology Park.

Other ongoing initiatives include the beautification of Tura Bazaar, construction of a Convention Centre, development of the Pelga Tourist Circuits and Hospitality Complex, a Working Women’s Hostel, heliport infrastructure and the Tura Water Supply Scheme.

Officials informed the meeting that redevelopment work at the Polo Orchid Hotel is also expected to commence shortly.

The meeting further reviewed projects worth Rs 242.74 crore that are ready for the tendering stage. These include the redevelopment of Najing Bazaar, construction of a multi-level parking and cinema complex at SMELC, Tura City Park, an Active Ageing Centre, a Kids Zone at Araimile and the proposed Tura Promenade.

Additional projects in the pipeline include the Chief Minister’s Youth Centre, renovation of the Circuit House, development of a commercial complex, installation of modern street lighting and sports infrastructure at Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Officials also discussed conceptual-stage projects estimated at around Rs 155 crore, including affordable housing facilities, an archery complex and additional commercial infrastructure.

Sangma stressed the importance of the timely execution of all projects and directed departments to strengthen inter-departmental coordination to ensure smooth implementation of the ambitious redevelopment plan for Tura town.
