Kolkata, July 14 (IANS) Due to a well-marked low-pressure area, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata’s Alipore on Tuesday predicted heavy spells of rain in south Bengal districts including Kolkata till Saturday. At the same time, there is a possibility of thunderstorms in the state throughout the week.

The districts of south Bengal will experience more thunderstorms till next Saturday. After that, the intensity of thunderstorms may increase. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in most of the districts. Several districts adjacent to Kolkata may receive more rain in the next few days. There is a possibility of thunderstorms in Kolkata as well.

According to an official at RMC, a yellow warning of thunderstorms and rain has been issued all over south Bengal till next Saturday.

Thunderstorms may occur along with gusty winds. Gusty winds may blow at a speed of 50 kilometres per hour in some places.

On Tuesday, there may be more rain in Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore districts. There is a possibility of heavy rain in the two coastal districts of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas on Wednesday as well.

Along with this, there may be more thunderstorms in West Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura districts. Heavy rain is likely to occur in Howrah, Hooghly, West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura and West Burdwan districts on Thursday. More rain is likely in East Burdwan, Purulia, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts on Friday.

“The sky may start clearing a bit in the districts of south Bengal from Saturday. Thunderstorms may decrease. However, there is a risk of increasing disasters again in the northern districts from Saturday,” said the Met Department official.

On Tuesday, the five north Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar may experience thunderstorms.

On Wednesday, heavy rains may also occur in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. The sky may remain somewhat clear on Thursday and Friday.

However, there is a risk of increasing rain again from Saturday. Heavy rains may occur in the five districts on Saturday. The amount of rain will increase further on Sunday and Monday. Heavy to very heavy rains may occur in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on those two days. Meanwhile, thunderstorms will prevail in other districts as well.
