Patna, June 9 (IANS) A woman and her son died, and eight others were seriously injured in a tragic road accident on the Patna-Bakhtiyarpur four-lane highway in Patna district, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident triggered panic in the area, and local residents rushed to the spot to assist the victims before they were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Phulmati Devi and her son, Upendra Singh, residents of Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh. According to an official, the family was returning home after offering prayers at Babadham (Deoghar) when the accident occurred.

The injured include the driver of the vehicle, Veer Kumar, Nikki Devi, Pawan Kumar, Rukmani Devi, Renu Devi, Sanjana Singh, and Payal Kumari. All of them were initially taken to a nearby Community Health Centre (CHC), where they received first aid before being referred to Patna for advanced medical treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, the Bolero vehicle was travelling at a high speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle veered off the road, crashed into a roadside tree, and overturned. Local residents rushed to the spot and helped rescue those trapped inside the vehicle.

After receiving information about the accident, the police also reached the spot and took charge of the situation. The bodies were sent to Barh Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination and were later handed over to the family members.

Bakhtiyarpur Station House Officer, Devanand Sharma, said that the family of the deceased was informed about the incident over the phone. He added that the injured victims have been admitted to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) for better treatment.

“A speeding Bolero lost control on the Bakhtiyarpur four-lane highway, crashed into a tree, and overturned. A mother and son died in the accident, while eight others were injured and admitted to the hospital for treatment,” said Devanand Sharma, SHO, Bakhtiyarpur.
