MP CM slams Rahul Gandhi over ‘traitor’ remark, seeks resignation

Lucknow/Bhopal, May 20 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday sharply criticised Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for his “traitor” remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

“It is deeply unfortunate that such remarks are emanating from the Leader of the Opposition. This constitutes an insult to the entire democratic system,” Yadav said during his visit to Lucknow on Wednesday night.

LoP Rahul Gandhi triggered a political storm while addressing a ‘Bahujan Swabhiman Sabha’ commemorating local revolutionary Veera Pasi, where he urged supporters to confront RSS workers.

“When RSS workers come to your homes and talk about Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, you must tell them that their organisation, Modi and Shah, are traitors,” LoP Rahul Gandhi said at the event.

Reacting to the statement, CM Yadav said democracy rests on two pivotal positions: the ruling side led by the Prime Minister and the opposition led by the Leader of the Opposition.

“It is entirely understandable if one engages in substantive policy discussions or raises questions regarding the government’s policies. However, given the nature of the discourse Rahul Gandhi is currently employing, I believe he ought to resign from his post,” Yadav said.

He demanded that the Congress party should also take disciplinary action against its senior leader.

“The manner of debate that Rahul Gandhi is currently engaging in is certainly not in keeping with the spirit of democracy,” the Chief Minister said.

Yadav said that criticism of government policy is legitimate in a democracy, but remarks targeting the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and the RSS as “traitors” go beyond political discourse.

“The Congress leader’s statement is not only an attack on individuals but an insult to democratic institutions,” he said, adding that the Leader of the Opposition holds a constitutional position and must maintain decorum in public debate.

LoP Rahul Gandhi’s remarks at the Lucknow event accused the RSS, PM Modi, and Amit Shah of a systematic assault on India’s constitutional framework, calling on supporters to directly challenge RSS workers on the issue.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the comments, with several leaders accusing Rahul Gandhi of lowering the level of political discourse.
