Patna, May 22 (IANS) A criminal accused in a recent murder case sustained a gunshot injury during a police encounter in Jehanabad district.

According to an official, the accused, identified as Bikku Singh, had been arrested in connection with the murder of Deepak Kumar, who was shot dead two days earlier within the jurisdiction of the Bhelawar police station.

The police said Bikku Singh was being taken to a canal bank near Dhuriyari village under the Ghosi police station area to recover the weapon allegedly used in the murder late on the night of Thursday.

During the recovery operation, the accused allegedly retrieved the hidden firearm and opened fire on the police team.

Officials stated that one bullet struck the vehicle of the Ghosi Station House Officer, damaging the vehicle, after which the accused attempted to flee.

In response, police personnel opened retaliatory fire, during which Bikku Singh sustained a bullet injury to his left leg and collapsed on the spot.

The injured accused was initially taken to the Ghosi Primary Health Centre for first aid and later referred to Jehanabad Sadar Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Manoj Kumar Pandey, ASP of Jehanabad, confirmed the sequence of events and stated that the operation was being conducted based on information provided by the accused during interrogation.

Meanwhile, security has been significantly tightened at Jehanabad Sadar Hospital. Police personnel have heavily barricaded the premises, and entry restrictions have been imposed. Media access has also been restricted, while patients entering the hospital are being subjected to questioning and security checks.

The encounter comes just days after the murder of Deepak Kumar triggered unrest at the Sadar Hospital.

Police officials stated that the accused has been booked under the relevant sections pertaining to murder and the Arms Act.

According to the police, the accused will be produced before the district court after being discharged from the hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment following the encounter-related injuries.
