Kohima, June 20 (IANS) Concerned over the increasing incidents of sexual assault against women, particularly minor girls, Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Saturday directed Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma to review the prevailing law and order situation and strengthen measures to address such crimes, officials said.

A Lok Bhavan official stated that the Governor held a review meeting with DGP Rupin Sharma at Lok Bhavan to assess the situation regarding sexual assault cases against women, especially minor girls, and the response of law enforcement agencies.

The official added that Governor Yadav asked the DGP to examine the overall cases of assault against women, particularly minor girls, and take all necessary measures to effectively deal with such crimes.

During the review, the Governor expressed deep concern over the growing number of reported cases and stressed the need for swift, effective and exemplary action against perpetrators.

He underscored the importance of ensuring the safety and security of women and children across the state and called for heightened vigilance, stronger preventive mechanisms and prompt investigation of all cases involving crimes against women and minors.

The Governor directed the police department to intensify efforts to curb crimes against women and children, strengthen monitoring and surveillance mechanisms, and ensure that victims receive timely support, protection and justice.

He also emphasised the importance of public awareness and community participation in preventing such offences and creating a safer environment for women and children.

The DGP briefed the Governor on the prevailing situation, ongoing investigations and various initiatives being undertaken by the police to enhance the protection and security of women and children throughout the state.

Reiterating his concern, the Governor said crimes against women and children must be dealt with firmly and without delay, stressing that every possible effort should be made to create a safe, secure and conducive environment for all citizens.

Meanwhile, Nagaland Police urged people not to circulate unverified messages, images, videos, or other content on social media platforms, warning that legal action would be taken against those found in violation of the law.

In an advisory issued by Police Headquarters, group administrators and members of all social media platforms were advised to exercise caution when posting, sharing, or forwarding messages, images, videos, or any other content.

The advisory stated that if any post, message, or material is found to be offensive, misleading, unlawful, or likely to disturb public peace and tranquillity, the concerned individual and the group administrator would be held liable, and appropriate legal action would be initiated in accordance with the provisions of law.

It further noted that group administrators are responsible for monitoring content shared within their groups and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards. All users have therefore been cautioned to verify information before sharing it and to refrain from posting or forwarding content that could incite hatred, violence, panic or public disorder, the advisory added.
