National leaders salute AIBC for 40 years of Australia–India engagement

The Australia India Business Council (AIBC) has received congratulatory messages from senior Australian and Indian representatives as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of work in strengthening business, cultural and people-to-people ties between Australia and India.

Among those recognising the milestone was Sam Mostyn, who acknowledged the importance of the Australia–India relationship and the vital role played by enduring personal and community connections in bringing the two nations closer together.

In a message shared during the anniversary celebrations, the Governor-General highlighted the value of people-to-people links in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between Australia and India. AIBC thanked her for her support and warm wishes during what it described as a landmark year for the organisation.

The celebrations also featured a message from Silai Zaki, who reflected on the growing significance of the Australia–India partnership and the opportunities emerging from deeper economic, commercial and community engagement.

Representing one of India’s most dynamic centres of commerce, industry and innovation, Ms Zaki recognised the contribution AIBC has made in advancing bilateral cooperation and strengthening connections between businesses and communities across the two countries. The council expressed its appreciation for her participation in the anniversary celebrations.

Further recognition came from Andrew Barr, who highlighted the remarkable evolution of Australia–India relations and the expanding opportunities for collaboration across technology, education, trade and innovation.

AIBC noted that Chief Minister Barr has consistently championed economic development, innovation and multicultural engagement while supporting stronger international partnerships that deliver benefits for Australian businesses and communities.

Founded in 1986, AIBC has played a significant role in connecting businesses, professionals and community leaders from Australia and India. Over the past four decades, the organisation has helped promote trade, investment and cultural exchange during a period of unprecedented growth in bilateral relations.

The anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the transformation of the Australia–India relationship, which has expanded far beyond traditional commercial links to encompass education, research, innovation, skills development and extensive people-to-people engagement.

Today, Australia and India enjoy a comprehensive strategic partnership supported by growing trade, investment and defence cooperation, alongside strong cultural and community ties built by a vibrant Indian diaspora across Australia.

As it enters its fifth decade, AIBC says it remains committed to building on its legacy of partnership, collaboration and engagement while supporting new opportunities that will further strengthen the Australia–India relationship in the years ahead.
