Odisha: BJD plans ‘Nari Adhikar Abhiyan’ over Women’s Reservation Bill delay

Bhubaneswar, May 1 (IANS) The Opposition Biju Janata Dal on Friday announced that it will launch the “Nari Adhikar Abhiyan” (Women’s Rights Campaign) from May 10 to May 25 across all constituencies in the state, protesting against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for its alleged anti-women policies and failure to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill.

In a press conference held at the party headquarters here, the regional party launched a scathing attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party for misleading people by falsely accusing Opposition parties of being anti-women over the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The Biju Janata Dal leaders stated that although the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023, the Bharatiya Janata Party is merely indulging in theatrics instead of implementing it.

Speaking to media persons, senior Biju Janata Dal leader and the Opposition Chief Whip Pramila Mallik said the entire country witnessed how the Bharatiya Janata Party convened a special session of Parliament and attempted to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill by linking it with the Delimitation Bill.

Mallik said that the entire country witnessed the Bharatiya Janata Party convene a special session of Parliament and attempt to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill by linking it to the Delimitation Bill. She noted that after the bill was defeated in Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party is now convening special sessions in state assemblies to level false allegations against Opposition parties.

“The delaying tactics of the Bharatiya Janata Party in implementing the already passed Women’s Reservation Bill have now been exposed before the public. At the time of its passage in 2023, all political parties in the country, including the Biju Janata Dal, had supported it and continue to do so even today. Under the pretext of delimitation, the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to push the Women’s Reservation Bill into uncertainty,” said Mallik.

Biju Janata Dal leader Mallik alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is staging public outrage rallies to project itself as pro-women and brand Opposition parties as anti-women, asserting that women across the country are well aware of the ground reality and cannot be misled.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party is the only party that does not want to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill until there is an increase in seats in Parliament and state assemblies. This reflects its male-dominated and anti-women mindset. Therefore, to expose the Bharatiya Janata Party’s anti-women attitude before the public, the Biju Janata Dal will organise the Nari Adhikar Abhiyan from May 10 to May 25,” Mallik added.
