Bhubaneswar, April 4 (IANS) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving Rs 447.11 crore for the upgradation of a key National Highway stretch in the state.

In a statement issued on behalf of the people of Odisha, the Chief Minister said the sanctioned funds will strengthen a vital interstate corridor and improve connectivity across multiple districts.

The project involves the upgradation of a 103.52-km stretch of the Kurumpuri–Raj Khariar section across NH-353 and NH-59 in Nuapada and Balangir districts.

The corridor connects the Raipur–Mahasamund region of Chhattisgarh with Odisha and extends further towards Berhampur and Gopalpur Port.

In a post on X, Majhi said the investment will enhance road safety, ensure smoother movement of passengers and freight, and unlock tourism potential in destinations such as Daringbadi and the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary.

“This transformative project will accelerate regional development and bring lasting prosperity to the people of Odisha,” he said.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a separate post on X, said the upgradation will cover Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Ganjam districts. He added that the works will include rectification of black spots and provision of paved shoulders, improving safety for commuters, especially two-wheeler riders.

The minister said the improved highway will facilitate efficient movement of passenger and freight traffic, while enhancing access to hill regions and tourist destinations, thereby boosting local tourism and economic activity.

The project is expected to provide a major boost to southern and western Odisha, regions that have long awaited improved road infrastructure. Once completed, it is likely to reduce travel time, lower logistics costs, and promote trade between Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh.

Officials said the project is also expected to generate employment during the construction phase and create new opportunities for economic growth in the region.
