Odisha: Engineer arrested in DA case; assets 241 pc beyond income

Bhubaneswar, April 9 (IANS) Odisha Vigilance on Thursday arrested a senior engineer of the Department of Water Resources for allegedly possessing assets 241 per cent in excess of his known sources of income.

“On April 9, Rajesh Chandra Mohanty, Additional Chief Engineer, Central Irrigation Circle, Odisha, Bhubaneswar, currently posted as Additional Chief Engineer (Dam Safety), was arrested by Odisha Vigilance and forwarded to the Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, for possession of disproportionate assets (DA) to the tune of 241 per cent of his known sources of income, which he could not satisfactorily account for,” informed a senior vigilance official.

The official further noted that simultaneous house searches were conducted on Wednesday at six locations across Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal districts, linked to Mohanty, over allegations of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The raids were carried out at six locations, including a residential triple-storeyed building at Baramunda Housing Board Colony in Bhubaneswar, his paternal house at Kolhasingh village under Badachana police station in Jajpur district, the house of his relative at Deula Sahi, Jubilee Town in Dhenkanal, his office chamber as Additional Chief Engineer, Dam Safety, Bhubaneswar, a double-storeyed building and farmhouse at Bimbol in Bhapur, Dhenkanal, and the house of his associate at Nayabazar under Chauliaganj police station in Cuttack district.

During the house searches, movable and immovable assets worth crores were unearthed in the name of Mohanty and his family members.

These include a palatial triple-storeyed building at Baramunda Housing Board Colony in Bhubaneswar, a farmhouse with a double-storeyed building at Bimbol in Bhapur area of Dhenkanal district, eight valuable plots, including one in Bhubaneswar, one in Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur, and six in Bhapur in Dhenkanal, cash worth Rs 6.23 lakh, gold ornaments weighing 350 grams, deposits worth Rs 1.81 crore, flight tickets valued at Rs 13.47 lakh towards travel expenses, two 4-wheelers and three 2-wheelers, and household articles worth approximately Rs 35.57 lakh.
