New Delhi, June 16 (IANS) Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Taranjit Singh Sandhu took stock of the ongoing developmental works at the iconic Khan Market in central Delhi, reiterating the need to adhere to quality and fire safety benchmarks, an official said on Tuesday.

During the visit, the Lieutenant Governor discussed issues related to the modernisation of the area and the improvement of civic amenities, the official said.

He added that efforts are underway to develop Khan Market into a prominent and well-organised international destination, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global vision.

L-G Sandhu, while interacting with shopkeepers during the visit on Monday, stressed that an environment should be created in Khan Market that offers visitors a fresh experience and clearly reflects the progress being made.

He emphasised that ensuring highest standards of urban infrastructure remains a key priority, an official statement said.

“Upgrading such iconic public and commercial spaces by enhancing civic amenities, improving traffic and pedestrian management, as also providing a seamless experience for visitors, tourists, and local businesses alike, were essential,” L-G Sandhu added.

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairman Keshav Chandra and Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal were also present along with other senior officers during the visit.

The L-G inspected the ongoing improvement/development works and took a briefing on the project’s progress and implementation timelines from the NDMC Chairperson, NDMC and senior engineering officials.

L-G Sandhu also inspected the implementation of the Modular Rain Water Harvesting Systems at Satya Marg highlights need of decentralising water conservation infrastructure and asked for all works to be completed before the onset of the monsoon.

He said that strengthening and decentralising water conservation infrastructure remains essential for building a climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable capital.

“Such modular rainwater harvesting systems are instrumental in enhancing groundwater recharge, mitigating localised waterlogging, and promoting efficient urban water management across Delhi,” he added.

With the monsoon approaching, he emphasised the need to accelerate the adoption and expansion of such eco-friendly and sustainable infrastructure solutions across the city.

He also said that “we remain firmly committed to advancing green urban development and securing Delhi’s environmental future through innovative and resilient civic infrastructure”.

NDMC Chairman Chandra told L-G Sandhu that works on 290 out of its 340 existing and planned rainwater harvesting structures has been completed, making them clean and operational.

The remaining 50 pits, including 28 modular systems and 22 conventional structures, are being cleaned on a fast-track basis.
