PM Modi, national leaders extend birthday wishes to ex-PM Deve Gowda on 94th birthday (Ld)

Bengaluru, May 18 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several prominent national and state leaders on Monday conveyed their wishes to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on the occasion of his 94th birthday.

A veteran Indian politician, Deve Gowda is widely regarded as a grassroots leader and champion of farmers’ welfare.

Born in Karnataka’s Hassan district, he served as Chief Minister of Karnataka before becoming the Prime Minister of India in 1996. Deve Gowda is also the founder and guiding force behind the Janata Dal (Secular). Even at the age of 94, he has vowed to bring the JD(S) back to power in Karnataka.

Extending his wishes on social media platform X, PM Modi stated: “Best wishes to H.D. Deve Gowda Ji on his birthday. He has made an outstanding contribution to our nation during his long years in public life. He is known for his deep understanding of policy-related issues and passion towards serving the marginalised. Praying for his long and healthy life.”

Rajnath Singh stated: “Greetings and warm wishes to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda ji on his birthday. He has made noteworthy contribution to India’s development, particularly in safeguarding the interests of farmers. Praying for his good health and long life.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also conveyed his greetings, stating: “Birthday wishes to former Prime Minister and senior political leader H.D. Deve Gowda. I pray that God blesses you with good health and long life so that you may continue serving the people of the state for many more years.”

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, son of Deve Gowda, paid an emotional tribute to his father. In his message, Kumaraswamy described Deve Gowda’s journey of struggle, sacrifice and dedication as exemplary and said his ideals would continue to inspire generations. He also prayed for his father’s long life, good health and strength to continue serving the nation.

Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav stated, “Heartfelt birthday wishes to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda ji. May the Almighty bless you with health and prosperity.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Deve Gowda as “a statesman of our times” and said the country continued to look up to his guidance enriched with decades of political experience. He also prayed for his long and healthy life.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated: “Warm birthday wishes to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda Ji. Your commitment towards the welfare of people is truly admirable. Praying for your good health and a long life.”
