Kolkata, July 12 (IANS) A home tutor who is accused of sexually assaulting a 12th-grade student by calling her to his home has been arrested by the police, said a senior police officer on Sunday.
The incident was reported by the Lake Town police station in north Kolkata.
According to the police, the tutor called the student to his home for tutoring about four days ago. The girl alleged that the tutor wanted to spend time with her under the pretext of teaching. He gave her a drink laced with drugs. After taking the drink, the student fell unconscious within a few moments. At that time, the tutor allegedly sexually assaulted her.
According to the police, the student fell sick after regaining consciousness, and she wanted to go home. Later, she returned home alone.
Later, she complained to her parents against the tutor and narrated the entire incident. Eventually, a written complaint was filed by the family of the student at the Lake Town police station. On the basis of that, the accused was arrested on Saturday night.
The arrested tutor was produced before the Bidhannagar court on Sunday. Police said that an investigation into the incident has been initiated.
They have requested the judge to grant the arrested person into their custody for the sake of the investigation. On the other hand the accused, on the way to the court, claimed that he did not do anything and was innocent.
He also claimed that he has been framed. However, the court sent him to police custody after the hearing. The incident comes close on the heels of the brutal rape and murder of a minor in South 24 Parganas district’s Baruipur.
So far, four persons have been arrested in connection with the crime against the minor girl. One of them, Pravas Mondal, was killed in an encounter last week as he was trying to escape from police custody by snatching the firearm of an escorting cop.
West Bengal Police on Sunday changed the investigating officer (IO) for the case and appointed a more experienced and senior-ranking officer. Santanu Mukhopadhyay, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP)-rank officer, has been appointed to investigate the matter.
The previous two IOs, who were replaced in succession, were inspector-ranking officers.
