Jammu, May 14 (IANS) Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district said on Thursday that two alleged drug peddlers were arrested and 4.7 gm heroin recovered from their possession.

A police statement said the action was taken as part of the sustained drive against drug trafficking and substance abuse under the Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyaan.

The statement said District Police Reasi, under the supervision of SSP Reasi Mukund Tibrewal, achieved another success in its campaign against narcotics.

On May 13, 2026, a police party from Police Station Katra was carrying out routine patrolling and frisking duty at Varun Chowk in Katra.

During checking, two persons identified as Suresh Kumar, son of Sansar Chand and a resident of Ward No. 12, Matyal, Katra in Reasi district, and Jeevan Lal, son of Fareb Singh and a resident of Dhamma, Majalta in Udhampur district, were found moving under suspicious circumstances.

During frisking, approximately 4.7 gm heroin, commonly known as ‘chitta’, was recovered from the possession of accused Jeevan Lal.

Acting promptly, the police apprehended the accused on the spot and seized the contraband substance as per legal procedure.

In this connection, FIR No. 145/2026 under Sections 8, 21, 22 and 29 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Katra and further investigation has been taken up.

The operation was carried out by SHO Police Station Katra Inspector Ranjeet Singh Rao under the supervision of SDPO Katra Dr Bhishm Dubey and SP Katra Kameshwar Puri.

District Police Reasi reiterated its commitment to eliminating the drug menace from society and appealed to the public to cooperate by sharing information related to drug peddling or substance abuse in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat told a press conference on Thursday that J&K Police has shown consistent performance against narcotics networks since 2023.

He said there has been a 12-fold increase in the attachment of properties linked to drug trafficking between 2023 and 2026.

The DGP said J&K Police ranked third in the country in 2025 in property attachment under the NDPS Act and secured the top national rank in PIT-NDPS detentions, with 240 such detentions carried out during the year.

He further said there has been nearly a seven-fold increase in NDPS cases compared to the corresponding period last year.

So far, 724 FIRs have been registered and 806 persons arrested in connection with narcotics-related activities.

He said police have seized 667 kg narcotics and 19,000 units of psychotropic substances during the campaign.

Preventive action has also been taken against 24 habitual drug offenders.

Prabhat said 97 properties worth around Rs 41.85 crore linked to the narcotics trade have so far been identified and attached under the campaign.
