Ranchi, May 28 (IANS) A protest erupted in Ranchi’s Doranda police station area on Thursday after a youth injured in an assault died during treatment.
Family members and local residents placed the body outside the Doranda police station, blocked the road, and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Tanveer Ansari, a resident of Manitola in Ranchi. He had sustained serious injuries in an assault incident on Tuesday and succumbed during treatment on Thursday.
After his death, agitated relatives brought the body from RIMS to Doranda police station and began a protest, leading to traffic disruption on the main road.
Protesters alleged that the police had failed to take timely and strict action against the accused after the incident, which emboldened them.
The family has demanded the immediate arrest of the named accused and compensation for the victim’s family.
According to the FIR lodged with Doranda police station, Mohammad Javed, Rizwan and Golden alias Ijaz, all residents of Firdous Nagar in the Manitola area, have been named as accused in the attack on Tanveer Ansari.
The complaint states that on Tuesday, the accused intercepted Tanveer near Hindustan Chowk and attacked him on the head with an iron rod, leaving him critically injured. He reportedly received around 40 stitches on his head.
Following the assault, locals rushed the injured Tanveer to Doranda Hospital, from where he was referred to Sadar Hospital and then to RIMS. He was later admitted to a private hospital in Kokar for advanced treatment, where he died.
The deceased’s wife, Khateja Khatoon, in her complaint, has also alleged that the accused had threatened to kill the family.
Police officials said an investigation is underway and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused.
