Patna, June 26 (IANS) Tension prevailed at Dumra police station in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district on Friday after the death of a young man who was allegedly assaulted in Mumbai.

Hundreds of villagers and family members gathered at the police station, demanding action against those they hold responsible for his death.

The protest created a tense atmosphere for some time before police officials intervened and assured the family that appropriate action would be taken after an investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Sudhir Kumar, son of Nemardhari Mahant and a resident of Kethariya village under the Dumra police station area.

According to family members, Sudhir had gone to Mumbai in April for employment along with several acquaintances.

The family alleges that a dispute arose between him and his companions over a mobile phone.

Relatives claim that following the dispute, Sudhir was allegedly confined in a room and subjected to repeated assaults for several days.

According to the family, when Sudhir’s condition deteriorated, the accused allegedly placed him on a train bound for Bihar.

A relative, Vikas Kumar, alleged that Sudhir had been held captive and severely beaten.

He stated that a woman travelling on the train noticed Sudhir lying in an unconscious condition and contacted the family using information available in his wallet.

The family subsequently reached the railway station and arranged medical treatment for him.

According to relatives, Sudhir was admitted to a hospital and remained in intensive care for several days before slipping into a coma. Despite medical treatment, he later died.

Family members stated that a post-mortem examination was conducted and that they suspect people known to the deceased were involved in the alleged assault.

These allegations have not yet been independently verified by investigating agencies.

Following the death, villagers and relatives assembled at Dumra police station, demanding action against the alleged perpetrators.

The protest continued until police officials assured the family that their complaint would be examined and legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

Station House Officer of Dumra police station, Mukesh Kumar, stated that no written complaint had been submitted by the family at the time of the protest.

According to the police, the available information reveals that the alleged assault took place in Mumbai.

“Once a formal complaint is received, police will proceed according to legal procedures and coordinate the investigation as required,” the SHO said.

After receiving assurances from the police, the family and villagers returned to their village to perform the last rites of the deceased.
