Punjab BJP passes no-confidence motion against AAP govt at people’s Assembly

Chandigarh, May 1 (IANS) A no-confidence motion against the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government was unanimously passed at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Janta Di Vidhan Sabha’, or a people’s Assembly, with members raising slogans against the government.

The makeshift ‘House’, especially set up at the BJP’s party office here, also condemned the Chief Minister for allegedly appearing in an inebriated state in the legislative Assembly and demanded his impeachment.

Presenting the motion, working President and Member of Legislative Assembly, Pathankot, Ashwani Sharma, launched a sharp attack, stating that the government cares two hoots for High Court directions and has become anti-employee. He said crucial issues like gangsterism, drug deaths, and law and order collapse are not being debated, adding that the Aam Aadmi Party’s politics is built on untruth and its promise to make Punjab drug-free has completely failed.

Targeting Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Sharma accused the leadership of misleading people and diverting attention from real governance failures.

State Bharatiya Janata Party President Sunil Jakhar termed the situation the “darkest hour of democracy”. He said that the conduct of the Chief Minister has lowered the dignity of a constitutional office, adding that Bhagwant Mann is unfit to be the Chief Minister of Punjab.

Urging Kejriwal to act, Jakhar said that under his leadership, Punjab has been reduced to an automated teller machine.

Bharatiya Janata Party national General Secretary Tarun Chugh demanded accountability through stricter measures, stating that if there is nothing to hide, why fear a narco test? He alleged that labourers are being neglected, adding that workers are getting barely a fraction of promised employment, while the government fails to utilise central schemes.

Chugh further said that financial mismanagement, disregard for court directions, and suppression of media voices have become hallmarks of this government.

Former Union minister Vijay Sampla said that not a single major promise made to the Scheduled Castes has been fulfilled.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Iqbal Singh Lalpura emphasised that respect for Sikh sentiments must go beyond symbolism.

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Vikramjit Singh Sahney raised economic concerns, stating that they face a paradox: unemployment on one side and a lack of trained manpower on the other, and called for a shift towards long-term development policies.

The session concluded with Bharatiya Janata Party leaders asserting that the state government has failed in governance, broken public trust, and must be held accountable.
