Chandigarh, May 19 (IANS) The body of Punjabi singer Yashinder Kaur, 29, popularly known as Inder Kaur, who had been missing for the past six days, was found on Tuesday in the Neelon canal near Punjab’s Ludhiana district, the police said.

The family blamed her ex-boyfriend, who lives in Canada, for her kidnapping and murder. The family alleged that she was kidnapped at gunpoint.

The crime has created a huge buzz on social media, with fans expressing grief and demanding justice for the singer.

Victim’s brother, Jotinder Singh, told the police that Kaur had left her house in a Ford Figo car at around 8.30 p.m. on May 13 to buy groceries, but she never returned.

Following her disappearance, the family blamed Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of a village in Moga district, for pressuring her to marry him.

According to the police, the two met on Instagram three years ago and became friends. When Kaur learned that Sukhwinder was already married and had fathered a child, she severed ties with him. This allegedly led to a grudge against her.

The police had already lodged a first information report against the accused, who lives in Canada, his father, Pritam Singh, and his friend, Karamjeet Singh, both residents of Bhaloor village in Moga district, who have been arrested.

The police said the accused came to India via Nepal on April 29 and returned on May 13, the same day the woman was kidnapped.

Investigating officer Dalvir Singh told the media that the victim’s family had informed the police that Kaur and Sukhwinder were in a relationship earlier. However, they later parted ways.

When Kaur refused to marry him, the accused allegedly kidnapped her at gunpoint.

“The woman’s body was recovered from the Neelon canal today. Close to the spot where the body was recovered, the police found the victim’s car, which had bloodstains in it. Initial investigation suggests the woman was murdered in the car and later her body was dumped into the canal,” investigating officer Dalvir Singh was quoted as saying.
