Jaipur, June 3 (IANS) In a major enforcement action against tax evasion, the Enforcement Branch-II of the Commercial Taxes Department has arrested an accused in a GST evasion case involving more than Rs 50 crore.

The accused, Mahesh Chand Gupta, was produced before the Special Court (Economic Offences), Jaipur, on Wednesday. The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody.

The department is also conducting a detailed investigation to ascertain the involvement of any other individuals or firms connected with the case.

During the course of the investigation, it was found that Mahesh Chand Gupta operated a firm named JSM Industries, through which large-scale taxable supplies were allegedly made without issuing tax invoices and without payment of the applicable GST.

The investigation revealed that during the financial years 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25, the firm carried out substantial trading activities, primarily involving the purchase and sale of almonds. These transactions were allegedly conducted outside the books of account and without the issuance of valid tax invoices.

As a result of these clandestine transactions, GST amounting to more than Rs 50 crore is believed to have been evaded, causing significant loss to government revenue.

Verification of documents, digital records and audit reports established that the firm had purchased, stored and sold goods without recording the transactions in its official accounts.

Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, Enforcement Branch-II arrested Mahesh Chand Gupta under the provisions of Section 69 of the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.

The operation was carried out by a team comprising Sandeep Kumar Chaudhary (Assistant Commissioner), Rajesh Kumar Yadav (Assistant Commissioner), Sunil Dutt Sharma (State Tax Officer) and Rahul Natani (State Tax Officer) under the direction of Babu Singh Chauhan, Additional Commissioner (Administration), Enforcement Branch-II, and the supervision of Harendra Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner, Circle-A.

The Commercial Taxes Department remains firmly committed to curbing tax evasion and dismantling networks engaged in unaccounted and unlawful business transactions.

The department will continue to undertake strict enforcement measures to ensure compliance with GST laws, safeguard government revenue and promote a transparent and fair tax regime across the state.
