Kolkata, June 19 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned two suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in connection with the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, and also issued a notice to the suspended former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal for questioning.

The two suspended IPS officers questioned by the CBI on Friday afternoon were the erstwhile deputy commissioners (North Division), Abhishek Gupta, and (Central Division), Indira Mukherjee.

CBI officials remained tight‑lipped on the exact questions posed to the two officers during the course of interrogation.

Sources said that on Friday, the CBI also issued a notice for interrogation to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal in the same case.

On May 15, soon after taking charge as the new and ninth Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari ordered the suspension of these three IPS officers and the reopening of the R.G. Kar rape and murder files by the state administration.

CM Adhikari also ordered a departmental probe against the three IPS officers and said that the role of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the matter would also be reviewed. He clarified that the parallel probe by the state administration would not impact the ongoing CBI investigation.

On the morning of August 9, 2024, the body of a junior lady doctor attached to the state‑run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was recovered from within the hospital premises. The Kolkata Police began an initial investigation, during which the role of the suspended IPS officers came under scrutiny and criticism.

Later, the CBI started investigating the matter following an order of the Calcutta High Court. While both the police and the CBI identified Sanjay Roy as the sole accused in the crime of rape and murder, the central agency continues to probe the angle of a larger conspiracy behind the crime.
